A first baseman's mitt needs to catch everything thrown at it — from laser throws to one-hop rockets to scoops in the dirt. We break in your first base mitt to be a true scoop machine: wide open, deeply pocketed, and ready to dig out anything. No steam. No shortcuts.

Why No Steaming?
Steam forces open leather fibers with heat and moisture. On a first base mitt, this can cause the thick palm padding to shift and sag, compromising the scoop platform where you need it most. We use professional conditioning oil and mechanical press shaping to build a wide, durable pocket that holds its shape long-term.

Our Break-In Process

  1. Intake Inspection — We inspect your mitt for any pre-existing wear or damage and note your order preferences
  2. Deep Conditioning — Professional leather conditioning oil worked into all surfaces, laces, and the wide palm by hand
  3. Mechanical Press Shaping — Controlled press shaping to open the pocket wide and break the hinge for the scoop motion
  4. Mallet Work — Targeted mallet work to build a deep, wide pocket shaped for first base catches and scoops
  5. Hand Shaping — Final forming for maximum scoop width and pocket depth to your preferred style
  6. Seal & Protect — Final conditioning pass to seal and preserve the leather

What to Include in Your Order Notes

When you check out, leave a note with your preferences so we can shape your mitt exactly right:

  • Throwing Hand — Right-Hand Thrower (RHT) or Left-Hand Thrower (LHT)
  • Pocket Style — Wide & Shallow (maximum scoop, forgiving on bad throws) or Deep & Narrow (more control, tighter pocket)
  • Hinge Preference — Stiff (more support) or Broken In (easier close for quick transfers)
  • Any Special Requests — league level, position in lineup, or feel preferences
