A catcher's mitt out of the box is a board. A properly broken-in catcher's mitt is a target - soft enough to catch cleanly, firm enough to frame every pitch. We build you that mitt using conditioning oil, mechanical press, and mallet work - never steam.

Why No Steaming?
Steam forces open leather fibers with heat and moisture. On a catcher's mitt, this accelerates breakdown of the thick palm padding and can cause it to droop and shift toward the fingers - ruining the catching platform. We use professional conditioning and mechanical press shaping to build a lasting, durable pocket.

Our Break-In Process

  1. Intake Inspection - We inspect your mitt for any pre-existing wear or damage and note your order preferences
  2. Deep Conditioning - Professional leather conditioning oil worked into all surfaces, laces, the pocket, and hinges by hand
  3. Mechanical Press Shaping - Controlled press to form the round catching pocket and break the mitt hinge
  4. Mallet Work - Targeted mallet work to deepen the catch pocket and form the circular shape specific to catcher's mitts
  5. Hand Shaping - Final forming to your specified closing style (standard round catch, hinged two-piece, or rolled edge)
  6. Seal & Protect - Final conditioning pass to seal and preserve the leather

What to Include in Your Order Notes

When you check out, leave a note with your preferences so we can shape your mitt exactly right:

  • Throwing Hand - Right-Hand Thrower (RHT) or Left-Hand Thrower (LHT)
  • Pocket Style - Shallow/Circular (standard framing pocket) or Deep/Hinged (power hinge style)
  • Closure Feel - Firm (more resistance, tight closure) or Soft (easier close, faster snap)
  • Any Special Requests - league level, preferred feel, or any quirks about your mitt
